Why is logic considered a branch of philosophy?

Madlyn Fallis: Philosophy is thinking about thinking. And logic (I took Logic 101 in college) is how we know if something is true or not, and that's considered a thought process. Our whole world of socializing (vocal and written) is based on If A = B, and B = C, then A must = C also. You will find that many people don't apply that rule to their own thinking process, and so we get a lot of cultural oddities that seem to defy logic, but in the end...The universe runs on logical principles. A massive body should cause space to curve and so should cause gravity. An orbiting planet should form an elliptical orbit, and sure enough it does....Show more

Danyell Rowback: I think we need our definitions straight here.Philosophy is to discover truth. Science is a methodology in which truths can be found, not the only one. Science deals with mainly empiricism while there are other methods such as rationalism. Logic is a tool used by these methods. Rene Descartes used rationalism t! o discover the truth that I exist, while Robert Boyle used the scientific method to discover the truth that gas expands when heated, both needed logic to achieve this. Logic is therefore considered a branch of philosophy because without logic truth cannot be understood, let alone discovered. Other branches of philosophy such as ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics, etc., are categories of truths....Show more

Irvin Guiles: It is not a "branch". It is a subset of epistemology. Without logic, there could be no thoughts, but thoughts themselves are composed of metaphysical judgments based on epistemological operations.Read these two small linkshttp://www.importanceofphilosophy.com/Epistemology...http://www.importanceofphilosophy.com/...Show more

Jose Calaycay: logic is a major accomplishment in the history of the human mind. without logic one is still mired in magic and BS. The goal of philosophy is reality - it's to understand "how it all works" - and one uses logic to get there.

Matt Gerdeman: Philosophy means love of wisdom and logic is the first steps on the path to wisdom.Philosophy also means Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline.2. Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods.3. A system of thought based on or involving such inquiry: the philosophy of Hume.4. The critical analysis of fundamental assumptions or beliefs.5. The disciplines presented in universit! y curriculum's of science and the liberal arts, except medicine, law, and theology.6. The discipline comprising logic, ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics, and epistemology.7. A set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particular field or activity; an underlying theory: an original philosophy of advertising.8. A system of values by which one lives:9. Challenge your preconceptions....Show more

Shawnna Kusky: I think logic makes science possible; to be able to look at something objectively as possible...and unassuming as can be...is what allows science to work IMHO. It's the means to apply science in an intelligent way. But it's still a philosophy in my book; a way to look at things as well as a way to apply ourselves.....it just happens to work, in verifiable ways.
