Dental Hygienist vs. Dental Assistant?

Antone Youla: Based on what you said, being an assitant is better since you get to work at one place full time. The extra money a hygienist makes is partially spent on health insurance, gas, and car maintenance. After all,the extra driving means more gas expenses and more wear and tear on your car. Let us not even talk about the time spent driving from place to place and the aggravation of having to drive so much. And,you better have a car if you are a hygienist cause catching public transportation would be hell. There are a lot of advantages in working in one place. God Bless....Show more

Hobert Dula: Hygienist! They make more than twice as much as assistants. There are plenty of full-time jobs available. Even if you did choose to work at more than one office, you could pick offices that are close to your house. Working 2 days per week at a hygienist's salary will be as lucrative as working 5 days as an assistant. The only downfall is the intense schooling and the ! incredibly competitive selection process. As far as the duties that are performed:A hygienist is responsible for the dental "cleaning" or prophylaxis that a patient receives. They do other things as well but that is the best way to concisely explain their duties. An assistant actually assists the dentist during fillings, root canals, etc... Then subsequently disinfects the room and sets up for the next patient. They may also assist the front desk from time to time with confirming patient appointments, filing charts, and other office duties....Show more
