how high does a railing need to be?

Hilton Paiva: This Site Might Help You.RE:how high does a railing need to be?from the planks on a deck, how high would the arm rail that run around the perimeter need to be?...Show more

Marna Liddie: Needs to be at least 1 metre high so you cant accidentally fall over it .( unless you are over 7ft tall)

Dewey Heersink: There is probably a code in place regarding the minimum/maximum distance between the balusters. Where I live the measurement is 4.0 inches.

Geraldo Mccalla: Building codes will vary on this height. I use 36" on decks that are relatively close to the ground level. Decks higher than 3' off the ground I consult with the homeowner and raise this height to 40" with no more than 4" between balusters.Decks that are 4' or higher I go to 42".We always use full length posts for our hand-railing. The perimeter posts are set so they are one pc. from in ground to up past deck to rail height. This is much stronger than bolting on 4"x4" to skirt board to! form railing supports. We also run the flat hand-railing on top in longest full lengths possible. I then cut small blocks of 4" x 4" (3-4") and attach them on the top of the flat top rail directly above the 4"x4"s below. This makes it look like the posts come up through the top flat rail - when actually they don't. Why? The top rail is much stronger when it is not notched out to fit around the vertical 4"x4"s. I then put a post finial on top of this short pc. of 4" x4" usually copper. This looks great.Note* If you have any type of benches on the perimeter of your deck, you need to raise up the railing behind these benches for safety....Show more

Son Ahlers: 42 inches at the bottom and the beginning of the tread , all the way up

Sol Bayn: 42 inches

Soraya Coodey: Yes it would. It would be worth the investment IF Americans stopped driving their gas guzzling vehicles. Yes, many seniors are already using trains. I have a good example of how rail is beneficia! l. Several times a year I go to a large midwestern city to sho! p, go to ball games or catch a concert. I get on a Metro link outside the city, some 30 miles away. It is cheap. I don't hassle with driving in the city or parking. It is also fun. Much to my surprise many people do the same thing. When going and coming from ball games the Metro is packed, and the people enjoy it. That Metro connects to the bus station, rail station and the airport. The Metro link stations out in the burbs or country have plenty of parking and allow long term parking for no charge. It's a get deal. Yes, this is the future of travel/commuting in America....Show more
