Travis Sherrock: Yes, and you actually have 3 choices (including Amtrak -- it isn't any more expensive than Greyhound), but you have to work with their schedules. If economy is your highest priority, and you don't mind changing carriers part way, then option #3 is by far your best bet -- especially since you'll end up where you need to be to get the bus out to Chemeketa Community College.Choice #1: Greyhoundhttp://www.greyhound.com/ This takes hour to an hour-and-half, depending upon the time of day. There are 5-6 runs a day, depending upon the day. Current fares are $11-$13.50 each way, depending upon whether you get a refundable or non-refunadble ticket. The stations in both cities are located downtown, and can be reached via public transit. The station in Salem is on Church Street a few blocks north of the public transit mall where you'll get a bus out to Chemeketa. Choice #2: Amtrakhttp://www.amtrak.com/ The trips last about an hour each way. There are several! runs each direction every day, although about half of them are actually aboard a bus the train company runs. Current fares are $11-13 each way. The train station in Portland is on the same lot as the Greyhound station. In Salem, the train station is on 12th Street across from Willamette University and by Tokyo University's Salem branch, about a half mile from downtown. Both can be reached by public transportation.Choice #3: Combination of Tri-Met (Portland's public transit system) and SMART (South Metro Area Regional Transit)You can take Tri-Met to Wilsonville and then take the SMART 1X to Salem. http://www.tri-met.org/http://www.ridesmart.com/ The Tri-Met portion of the fare depends upon which services and zones you use. Tri-Met runs all day; check their website to figure out which routes will get you from where you'll be starting to Wilsonville. You may have to transfer along the way. BTW, you can't use a Tri-Met transfer on SMART. The current fare from Wilsonvil! le to Salem is $2. (Yes, that's two dollars.) There are a numb! er of runs between Wilsonville and Salem each day. The main SMART pickup and dropoff in Salem is downtown on the east side of the transit mall, but they make a couple of other stops around downtown -- just tell the driver where you want off and he'll let you know when you're there. In Wilsonville you can catch your ride at a number of places. There's a map (and schedule) of the route here: http://www.ridesmart.com/Index.aspx?page=68***Once in Salem you can take a #2, #11, or #17 Cherriots (Salem's public bus system) bus from the downtown transit mall out to Chemeketa Community College. Buy a day pass for $2. Just put $2 in the change box or bill slot when you get off (you pay getting off outbound from downtown and when you get on inbound) and the driver will hand you a square of paper. That's the pass. Just show it to the driver as you get back on for your return trip. The transit mall has an office with waiting room where you can pick up schedules -- also available online,! of course. http://www.cherriots.org/Happy travels....Show more

An Trebil: Portland to Salem the only option is Grey hound bus, I am not sure how much it cost but it will be a lot cheaper then a taxi.
Ulrike Hert: Sure you can rent a car, if you have a valid drivers' licenseand can afford the cost of the rental and insurance. Otherwisether! e is the bus depot for Trailways, and Greyhound buses. It's a 45 minute ! drive by car, and you'd have to make surethat the bus you'd want would drive straight through to guaran-tee your arrival time to get there. Make sure you have thereturn time guaranteed so that they have a seat for you tocome back at the time you want....Show more
